09/16/2003: A dying profession: kite maker!
The "Moon Kites" from Malaysia are flying artworks. It takes about three weeks to make one of the bigger kites which are the pride of the state Kelantan.
The national airline chose a traditional kite as symbol.

09/15/2003: Spinning the top - called "Gasing Uri" - is a traditional play in Malaysia. The professional tops are made of wood and tin and have a weight of up to 5 kilograms. If spun correctly, they spin for more than two hours.

09/15/2003: Seni Silat is the Malaysian martial art. We enjoy a second demonstration of that tradition. Although this sport looks quite peaceable it is without doubt a serious art and sometimes a hard fight.

09/15/2003: Kelantan is one of the more conservative and more Muslim states of Malaysia. Here many traditions are kept alive, like playing the big drum, the "Rebana Ubi". At important occasions it is played by many players.

09/15/2003: At the central market in Kota Bharu we find everything we need - and even more. We enjoy a stroll between the colourful lanes of vegetables, fruits, meat and fish. Strange and unknown odours meet our nose and we see many things of natural source of which we know neither name nor use!

09/15/2003: The time of daily cooking over the logfire is gone! In Asia the "restaurants" are so cheap that it would be stupid not to eat there. The food offered is as diverse as the races in this country are - Malay, Indian, Chinese, ... We always have a choice between many dishes we don't know. One of the country-wide specialities are satay: bits of meat on a small spit grilled over charcoals and served with different sauces like peanut or coconut. Very delicious!

09/14/2003: A nocturnal visit in our camp in the jungle.

09/12/2003: We spend some days on the small island Perhentian Kecil, one of the many good diving areas of Malaysia. Our car has to stay at the mainland so we have to rent a small "chalet" at the beach for the time between diving, dining and beaching.
